Quotes again!

I am still wrangling my office (this is now a 5+ day job!!) For some reason I’m finding it hard to wrap it up! It’s probably because I have less and less time to devote to it and the end game is some of the harder stuff. Anyway, got some great quotes this week!!!

Tuesday, January 17-It is just as foolish to complain that people are selfish and treacherous as it is to complain that the magnetic field does not increase unless the electric field has a curl. Both are laws of nature. John von Neumann-mathematician (I would like to take issue with this quote. Just because it is a law of nature for people to be this way, doesn’t make it right. I tend to complain when things aren’t right.)

Wednesday, January 18-They Feynman Problem-Solving Algorithm:  1 write down the problem; 2 think very hard; 3 write down the answer. Murray Gell-Mann-physicist (Another quote I would like to respond to as it is incomplete. First of all, I don’t think you need to write it down to contemplate solutions. Next, he leaves out the possibility of research, very important for some problems. And finally, it should be answer/answers. I think it important to recognize the possibility of multiple options, some better than others.)

Thursday, January 19-Always do whatever’s next. George Carlin-comedian (Sometimes a straightforward undertaking, sometimes not so much!!)

Friday, January 20-Men are not disturbed by things, but the view they take of things. Epictetus-philosopher What about things like bullets? Herb Kimmel-psychology professor in response to above quote. (Yes, even things like bullets. If a bullet is used to stave off an intruder, or kill a violent criminal/dictator, not many people would claim to be disturbed.)

Saturday, January 21-I always have a quotation for everything-it saves on original thinking. Dorothy L. Sayers-writer (A great idea, as long as we don’t get bogged down by cliche.)

Do you have any thoughts on these quotes? I, for one, feel it is important to analyze things of this nature no matter how “smart” the source.
